Peter Cushing Centenary: 1986 Radio Interview with Previously Unbroadcast Material

In 1986 I had the good fortune to record an interview with the wonderful Peter Cushing at his secretary’s home in Kent and he kindly gave me over an hour of exquisitely entertaining material.

Today would have been Peter’s 100th birthday. His centenary is being marked by special film screening, the re-release of his memoirs and so many other activities around the world, celebrations that are justly deserved. In 1986 I had the good fortune to record an interview with the wonderful Peter Cushing at his secretary’s home.

Peter’s agent said that he may give us around fifteen minutes for the interview. He must have been having fun because we recorded for over an hour. He even cancelled his dental appointment to carry on.

In this short clip from the interview, some of which has not been broadcast before, Peter show soff some of his impersonations, including Frankie Howerd and Noel Coward.

Not only was he a very talented actor on stage, television and the silver screen, but he was also a thoroughly lovely man. He was so generous with his time and his hospitality, no wonder he was adored by his fans and his peers. The gentleness of his character was illustrated as we left. The star of so many horror films stood by the front door and waved his cat’s paw goodbye as we went down the drive.
